Heartbleed – is my website affected?

It’s about a month after the Heartbleed bug was bought to light and there are still estimated to be over 300,000 websites that could still be at risk*.

The flaw…..

Heartbleed is a bug in a system called OpenSSL that helps encrypt the backend of a website and information like passwords and credit cards when they are entered. The actual bug has been around a while but has only just been spotted and it’s affected some of the most well-known websites in the world, such as Pinterest, Tumblr and Yahoo. The important thing is to make sure your website is not affected. Has your web company checked your website for you and if needed have they applied the patch that can fix it?

At Effective Group we’re always looking for ways to help our clients and the Heartbleed Bug is just one. If you’re unsure whether your website is affected then just give us a call and we can take a look and let you know. We’ve already checked our customers and are contacting anyone who may be affected. Nearly all of our websites are WordPress, because of its adaptability and ease of use for the customer and they’re not affected by the Heartbleed Bug. Paypal was also unaffected so any sites using that are okay.

But it may be a good time to review your website in general. Ask yourself the following questions to see whether you are maximising the opportunity.

  • If you have a password section is it safe and based on a two-step sign-in?
  • Is it easy for a customer to find what they are looking for? – put yourselves in their shoes
  • If you have a checkout service is it as safe as it could be? How fast does it process payments and are you getting the results you expect?
  • If you don’t currently sell online is it an area you could look to explore?
  • Where does your site appear on Google? – most people won’t look past the first page.
  • Have you tested the colour of buttons? – you’d be amazed at the difference it can make.
  • Is your content up-to-date and do you have a news feed that has recent posts?
  • Are you linking your blog to your social media?

If you want to chat through any of these updates just give us a buzz.
